Eco-Friendly Decoration: DIY Solar Sun Jars

Anything eco-friendly is automatically put on the short list for my events, but how can it get any better when it’s also DIY?

From Earth Friendly Weddings:
Solar sunjars are a really fun way to romantically light up an outdoor evening wedding. Less cheesy than LED candles and more eco-friendly than petroleum based wax candles, they’re pretty widely available on the net. For $55.00 you can get one at the MoMa Store. However, for those looking to save a little and test their DIY skills, thanks to LifeHacker, you can also make your own!

Immaculate Confection: Cookies on Hand

For those last-minute guests or late night cravings, I love this cookie dough for it’s simplicity in ingredients.

From Cool Mom Picks:

Recently I wanted to make cookies for my girls but I was too tired to start from scratch. I grabbed a thing of that refrigerated cookie dough that I remember eating raw in my college days and figured it would be fine in a pinch.

Oh man, was it horrible. Beyond horrible. Like two dozen cookies that went uneaten horrible.

Needless to say, I was skeptical when offered a chance to test drive the Immaculate Baking organic cookie dough but I’ll cut to the chase: Yum.

The dough is totally organic and free of preservatives and trans-fats so you can feel a little less guilty about not cracking your own egg in the bowl. And the result tastes good the next day too, and that’s saying something; we made quick work of the vanilla sugar and the peanut butter, and I’m definitely looking forward to trying out the other four flavors. Well, three of them at least (sorry oatmeal raisin).

I particularly love how supportive this little company is of the arts – each package is designed by a different American folk artist, with fun bits of trivia on the pack so kids have something to do until the buzzer goes off. Trust me, those ten minutes can be a long time when you’re smelling warm peanut butter cookies. -Liz

Autumn Wedding: Copper and Plum

While silver and gold metallics have been in style now for a few years, the more rustic but still polished copper is just starting to see a rise in popularity. This warmer, more subdued tone is perfect for an early autumnal wedding and looks positively regal when paired with a dusky shade of plum.

  • Trade in a copper cake stand for the standard silver (I love this cake and think it would look great with a plum colored ribbon!) — The Knot

Autumn Harvest Centerpiece

From: Martha Stewart Weddings

A table arrangement of grains celebrates the bounty of fall. In addition to wheat, which symbolizes a fruitful life, this textured display includes other dried grasses (available at crafts stores), so it can be made weeks ahead. The final flourish? A luxurious satin bow.

Fall Centerpiece

Centerpiece How-To
To make each centerpiece, you’ll need about a hundred stalks (six bunches) of dried grass and wheat.

1. Bundle 15 or so stems together at a time (they’re easiest to handle if you secure bundles with floral tape about 4 inches below grain pods).

2. Hold between thumb and forefinger at an angle. Add bundles, in a spiral as shown, until all are used.

3. Wrap with floral tape (choose a color that matches your ribbon). Trim ends with floral pruner (cut center tips shorter for a stable base). Tie a wide ribbon over tape.

Tool for the Task: Colored Floral Tape
This handy tape, which becomes sticky only when you stretch it, and then adheres only to itself, is now widely available in a variety of shades. That means it blends beautifully into boutonnieres, bouquets, and centerpieces such as this one.

Font Inspiration: Montague Script

I am in love with this new typeface by Stephen Rapp on Veer!

Montague Script takes its name from a small hilltown of western Massachusetts rich in culture and history. I lived in this beloved community for a number of years and it’s where I first began my study of calligraphy and lettering.

While most brush scripts take their cue from mid-twentieth century samples, Montague Script is a fresh, contemporary alternative. It comes directly from lettering written with a #3 sable brush on smooth vellum and is digitized with the same sensibility a lettering artist writes with. Montague reflects a dynamic interplay between form and rhythm not usually associated with type. Words suggest a baseline, yet are not bound by it. Letters vary in size, connect smoothly, yet break that connection purposefully as the scribe does intuitively. Beginnings, endings, alternates and ligatures come in as needed while you type. Many more alternates are available in the glyph palette of most current graphic software. Exuberant swash versions of upper and lowercase letters, as well as ligatures can be accessed through both the type and glyph palettes.

Montague Script is a natural for advertising, point of purchase displays, packaging and logo design, cards, journals and much more. You will be delighted at how well it can dress up a project and how easily it sets.

Quote of the Day

I like this quote – now when I have to put my daughter down to do something for her I will think of this.

Never miss an opportunity to make others happy, even if you have to leave them alone in order to do it.
