  • 1 short 1/4 inch and 1 long piece 2 inch black string licorice
  • 35 mini-marshmallows
  • 4 purple and 2 pink jelly beans

Directions

Frost cupcake. Place the large marshmallow in the center. Lightly frost candy eyes and press onto the marshmallow. Frost the back of the jujube candy and put below eyes to for a nose. Frost the short piece of licorice lightly and press underneath the nose to make the mouth. Press mini-marshmallows all around the cupcakes and the face to make the lambs coat. Frost the tips of the pink jelly beans to make ears. Stick the purple jelly beans in the front and back of the cupcake for feet. Curl the long piece of licorice and press into frosting to make the lamb’s tail.

Vanilla Cupcake:

  1. 2 2/3 cups sugar
  2. 1 cup (2 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 1-inch pieces
  3. 2 large eggs
  4. 2 large egg yolks
  5. 2/3 cup milk
  6. 2/3 cup water
  7. 2 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  8. 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  9. 1 1/3 cups cake flour
  10. 4 teaspoons baking powder
  11. 1/2 teaspoon fine salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line two 12-cup cupcake tins with paper liners. (To avoid cupcakes sticking if they overflow slightly, lightly spray the tops of the pans.) Put tins on a baking sheet. Set aside.

Process sugar and butter in a food processor until very creamy, scraping sides as needed, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the eggs and yolks, one at a time, pulsing after each addition. Add the milk, water, and vanilla and process to blend.

Whisk both flours, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Add the dry ingredients, in 3 batches to the wet, pulsing, and then scraping batter off the sides of the processor as needed after each addition. Process until the batter is very smooth, about 2 minutes.

Evenly pour the batter into the prepared cups, filling them 3/4 of the way full. Bake until the cakes are just firm and spring back when gently pressed, and the tops are golden, 18 to 25 minutes. Cool slightly in tin, and turn out of tin when cool enough to handle. Cool cupcakes completely on a rack before frosting.

Add the milk and vanilla mixture, scrape the bowl down, and mix until fully incorporated. Raise the mixer to high and beat briefly until fluffy, about 1 to 2 minutes. Use immediately.

Signs of Spring

From Boston.com:

The Northern Hemisphere is once more beginning its lean towards the Sun, with the spring equinox taking place last Friday, March 20th. People all over are welcoming the spring sunshine and new growth in many ways – from Stonehenge and Mayan pyramids to Dutch meadows and Texan beaches. Here is a collection that shows some of the signs of spring as we shake off the last bits of winter.

Death by chocolate cake.

Have you ever wished you could whip up a chocolate cake in a matter of minutes? One that you might devour without having to share it with anyone? The following recipe is just that. You can scarf it down on your own in front of a movie or have an original idea for an activity at a shower or other event. What a wonderful favor this would make to include the dry ingredients and print out the recipe

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
a small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

  1. Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.
  2. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
  3. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
  4. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
  5. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed!
  6. Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
  7. EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

Ping! You are now a fairy princess!

My sister-in-law just made these incredible felted magic wand favors for my niece’s 5th birthday party. She actually knitted the pieces of the wand, then washed them to create the felting. After she stuffed them and stitched them together, she sewed flashy beads on the front and a dowel for the handle. When she as finished, she had an amazing array of one-of-a-kind party favors the kids would have for years to come.

A Favor Isn’t Just a Favor

When my family and friends threw my baby shower earlier this year, it was full of wonderful things that I will forever keep in a special place in my heart. One was the act itself with all my family and friends; not exactly a surprise but I put my high school acting skills to good use. Another wonderful thing was the distance they traveled (in a snowstorm) just to attend and to honor me and the life I was bringing into this world. The one thing that made the shower so memorable was the favor that my friend in California

put together in her absence. Weeks before the shower, she had contacted everyone who was on the guest list – even those who couldn’t make it – and asked them for their favorite lullaby to include on a custom cd for me. She printed up the cd jacket with all the names of the songs as well as who chose them and put it in a cellophane bag with a photo album. She included a photo of me as a baby on the front as a tag. My mom chose “Baby Mine” by Bette Midler, which made me cry when I first listened to the cd, but at 8 months pregnant, it’s not much of a surprise.

Here is a list of the songs on my cd, to which my daughter has already fallen asleep many times:

Sleep, Sleep – Rosenshontz
Unicorn Song – Malarkey Brothers
Winken, Blinken and Nod – Kevin Roth & Janet Jackson Witman
Tala’al Badru Alayna – Yusuf Islam
Godspeed (Sweet Dream) – Dixie Chicks
Circle Game – Joni Mitchell
Baby Mine – Bette Midler
Lovely Evening – Lullaby Themes for Sleepy Dreams
Eidelweiss – Sound of Music
You Are My Sunshine – Elizabeth Mitchell
When You Wish Upon a Star – Johnny Mathis
Friends Lullaby – Hem
A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes – Hem
Al-Mu’allim – Sami Yusuf
Sweet Jane – Cowboy Junkies
The Girl with the Flaxen Hair – Claude Debussy
Moon River – Audrey Hepburn
Lazy Eye – Hem
What a Wonderful World – Louis Armstrong

I tried to post the above mix to itunes but because it was uploaded from a cd, it wouldn’t let me. Here is an imix I found on itunes that sounds like a good choice for showers.
