DIY…Time in a Bottle

Here’s a great way to display vintage family photos. Follow these few easy steps from Yankee Magazine.

You’ll need: glass bottle or jar glass cleaner photocopy of a photograph or print scissors two wooden skewers.

  1. Choose an attractive glass bottle or jar, whether new or antique (the larger the neck or the mouth the better). Clean it and dry it thoroughly. (Polident denture solution works great for getting old glassware clean.)
  2. Make a color or black-and-white photocopy of your picture on regular copier paper. The copy should be small enough (in length and width) to fit unrolled inside the glass container. Trim excess paper if necessary.
  3. Wrap the photocopy, blank side showing, around one of the wooden skewers and roll it into a tight cylinder.
  4. Slide the photocopy cylinder off the skewer and slip it, right side up, through the bottle’s neck (or the jar’s mouth).
  5. Insert both skewers down through the neck (or mouth).
  6. Working from the blank side (to avoid damaging the print), use the skewers to unroll the cylinder until it’s flat inside the bottle or jar. Pressing toward the front of the container from the back of the photocopy works best.
  7. Leave the top of your bottle or jar open if you like, or finish with a cork or clean metal cap.

Not Your Average Bridal Baking Supplies

I am a sucker for cute baking supplies so I loved this post from The Inspired Bride.

Bridal Shower Baking Supplies from Layer Cake Shop

Layer Cake Shop recently launched a new website storefront that features a lot of incredibly cute stuff for baking. There are really adorable baking cups that are a heck of a lot cuter than the standard grocery store variety. Their toppers are really great, too! I immediately thought that it’s an awesome place to go for really hip bridal shower cupcake making! How cute are the little white birds? They’d be great for an at home wedding with homemade cupcakes to give them a little something extra special! Spend some time digging through the assortment – there’s some great stuff!

Death by chocolate cake.

Have you ever wished you could whip up a chocolate cake in a matter of minutes? One that you might devour without having to share it with anyone? The following recipe is just that. You can scarf it down on your own in front of a movie or have an original idea for an activity at a shower or other event. What a wonderful favor this would make to include the dry ingredients and print out the recipe

5 MINUTE CHOCOLATE MUG CAKE

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips (optional)
a small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

  1. Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.
  2. Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
  3. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
  4. Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla extract, and mix again.
  5. Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed!
  6. Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
  7. EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

Bridal Shower Games

Bridal Bingo
Take a sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 paper and make “Bingo Cards” with 25 empty spaces (5 across, 5 down). Write BINGO across the top, one letter above each row. Have the guests write in the gifts that they think the bride-to-be will receive. As she opens her presents, each guest will cross off that gift if they have it on their bingo card. As soon as someone has marked off 5 in a row, they get a gift. This can go on until the bride is done opening her gifts.

Box of Recipes
Have each guest bring one of their favorite recipes on a specific recipe card included in the invitation or have them write it down that day. The recipes are then compiled in a book for the new bride to start out her marriage.

Timer Presents
While the bride-to-be is opening gifts, set a timer to go off after 30-60-90 seconds. Each time the timer rings, a small wrapped item like lotions, candles, chocolates, etc. is given to the person whose gift is being opened. This was a good game for a shower attended by women of all ages.

Tissue Paper Veil
Give each guest 3 sheets of ordinary white tissue paper and 5 minutes to create a veil. After 5 minutes, the guests model their veils and the bride-to-be chooses her favorite and gives a small present to that guest.

Wedding Quilt
Have each guest design one square reflecting the theme of love at the wedding shower using ribbon, buttons, beads, etc. When each person finished I had them sign the square. Later, before the wedding, the quilt can be sewn into a quilt and given to the couple as a gift from everyone at the shower.

Advice Book
Using a blank book, have the guests pass it around and write down their best ‘love and marriage’ advice. The outside can be decorated with fabric or photocopied pictures of the couple or just their names and the wedding date.

Bridal Pictionary
Have a list of things to be drawn or just bridal-related categories to get the creative juices going. Put up a large board on an easel or a sturdy chair and use a large pad of paper and markers. Divide into two teams and play the game just like normal Pictionary!

How Well Does the Bride Know the Groom?
Have someone ask the groom questions about himself beforehand. Then at the shower ask the bride the same questions. If the bride’s answer matches the groom’s, the bride gets a prize. If the answer doesn’t match, pick a guest’s name out of a bowl/hat and give them a prize.

I Never…
Give each guest pieces of candy equal to the number of guests. You can use M&Ms, kisses, etc. Starting with the bride, each guest must confess one thing they have never done (“I never have ridden a bike” or “I never drank alcohol”). The confessions could get a little dirty, depending on the crowd! Any guest who HAS ever done what was confessed must eat one piece of candy. The guest who has the most candy left wins the game and gets a prize. You can also give a prize for the one who has done it all and has no candy left.
